HITCHCOCK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TRENTON, NEBRASKA JUNE 29, 2026

A meeting of the County Board of Commissioners of Hitchcock County, Nebraska was held at the Hitchcock County Courthouse Commissioner’s Room, 229 East D Street, Trenton, Nebraska on Monday the 29th day of June 2026 commencing at 9:00 o’clock a.m. Present were Chair Paul Nichols, Vice Chair Ron Wertz and County Clerk Margaret Pollmann. Member Christopher Baker was absent. Notice of the meeting was given in advance thereof by publication on June 25th, 2026 in Scoop Media News, the designated method for giving notice. Board agendas are posted on the County’s website www.hitchcockcounty.ne.gov. Notice of the meeting was given to the Chair and all members of the Board. All proceedings hereafter shown were taken while the convened meeting was open to the attendance of the public. The Open Meetings Act was available for review and Chair indicated the location of such copy in the room where the meeting was being held. Also present Bill Roddy.  Chair Nichols opened the meeting at 9:00 a.m.  Member Nichols moved to approve the consent agenda consisting of approval of the June 29th, 2026 agenda and approval of the June 15th, 2026 meeting minutes. Member Wertz seconded the motion and after consideration a roll call vote was had as follows: Baker, Absent; Nichols, Yes; Wertz, Yes. Motion carried.  Treasurer Jackie Drain discussed inheritance tax fund transfers with the Board.  Member Wertz offered Resolution #26-13 transferring $300,000.00 from the Inheritance Tax Fund to the County General Fund to meet current expenditures, and moved for its’ adoption. Member Nichols seconded the motion and after consideration the roll was called thereupon as follows: Wertz, Yes; Nichols, Yes; Baker, Absent. Said resolution having been consented to by a majority of all members elected to said County Board, was by the Chair declared passed and adopted. A true, correct and complete copy of said resolution is on file in the office of the County Clerk and on the County’s website www.hitchcockcounty.ne.gov.  Member Wertz moved to approve the following claims. Member Nichols seconded the motion and after consideration, a roll call vote was had as follows: Wertz, Yes; Baker, Absent; Nichols, Yes. Motion carried.

Josh Kautz with McCook Public Power District and Colyn Suda with Southwest Public Power District met with the Board regarding the proposed moratorium on wind energy systems etc.  This item will be placed on the July 6th, 2026 agenda.
 Assessor Tara Riggs and Treasurer Jackie Drain were present for discussion on 2026/2027 employee wage increases.
 Attorney D. Eugene Garner joined the meeting.
 Assessor Riggs advised as to filed property valuation protests.  It was the consensus of the Board to hold property valuation protest hearings beginning the afternoon of July 20th, 2026.
 Sheriff Ryan King joined the meeting.  Discussion held on the recent resignation of a Sheriff’s department deputy.
 Motion Nichols by to ratify the Professional Service Agreement For County of Hitchcock County, Nebraska Comprehensive Planning Project with West Central Nebraska Development District as revised and to direct Chair to execute the same.  Member Wertz seconded the motion and after consideration a roll call vote was had as follows:  Baker, Absent; Wertz, Aye; Nichols, Aye.  Motion carried.
 Chair Nichols advised as to the Weed Superintendent/Zoning Administrator Mike Erickson request for a county issued/owned cell phone.
 Chair Nichols offered an update on Bureau of Reclamation land transfers.
 The Sheriff’s Returned Distress Warrant Report was on file.
 Member Wertz moved to adjourn at 10:18 a.m. and to meet for the next regular meeting on Monday, July 6th, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.  Member Nichols seconded the motion a roll vote was had as follows: Nichols, Yes; Baker, Absent; Wertz, Yes.  Motion carried.
